Microbiologist I

Position Title: Microbiologist I Department: Microbiology
Reports To: Director, Microbiology Work Location: Decatur, Illinois

Position Summary:
Under limited supervision, the Microbiologist I is responsible for performing microbiological testing of products and raw materials, reading environmental monitoring plates from controlled areas, microbial identification work, and other applicable duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Performs routine microbiological testing of products according to SOPs and Methods.
• Documents routine procedures following laboratory and company guidelines.
• Reviews and approves work performed by technician and peers.
• Performs microscopic particulate analysis of products and commodities.
• Conducts microbiological identifications..
• Performs Bacterial Endotoxin Testing for raw materials as well as in-process and finished products.
• Generates deviation and investigation reports under the direction of the Microbiology Supervisor.
• Provides Microbiology oversight for media fill inspections as per applicable SOPs.
• Organizes and arranges Growth Promotion Testing of Microbiological Media.
• Assists on the generation of outside source information retrieval and evaluation in support of special project work.
• Performs Sanitization Efficacy Testing.

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university with Major in Microbiology or equivalent.
• One to two years related experience and/or training.

Job Prerequisites:
• Excellent conceptualizing, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Experience in Word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
• Pharmaceutical industry knowledge strongly preferred.

Physical Demands, Mental requirements, and Work Environment:
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision for written work and PC use.
